Memories of the Highlands

Yesterday I could hear
Yesterday I could hear the roar of the stag and watch the leaping hind
Yesterday I could see
Yesterday I could see to the end of the loch and the mountains beyond
Yesterday I could walk
Yesterday I could walk across the purple mountain in the hazy sun
Yesterday I could touch
Yesterday I could touch the rock of basalt black with chessboard of lichen white
Yesterday I could drink
Yesterday I could drink the water at my feet from a living mountain stream
It’s heart beating with every swaying reed

Today all is hidden behind walls of rain
Today the cloud is all.
Today all life is hidden in rock and cave away from the driving rain

Yet I know beyond this white screen, the mountains remain
Colours unchanged

Even though the wind howls and the rain beats
I can still pick out the sound now coming from the sky
The roar of the stag
